Word Nerd : Thaumaturge

Word Nerd is an on-going feature that shares and highlights unique, whimsical and sometimes forgotten or overlooked words. It’s dedicated to the logophile in us all.

Thaumaturge (thau-ma-turge) noun

A worker of wonders and performer of miracles; a magician; a wonderworker.

thaumaturge from incendiaryglance.tumblrSacred Fire II by Michael Parkes

Thaumaturge is an word with ancient Greek origins and it’s original use didn’t associate with magic, rather it meant bringer of miracles and was used in reference to several saints. Time has, of course, brought a different connotation with magic and performer of wonders (Beautiful Creatures and Final Fantasy being two of the more popular places to run across the word). I like that thaumaturge is a more unique word to use in place of wizard or magician and yet it can almost mean something more, something a bit more mystical and almost transcendental element to it. It’s not necessarily just magical, it’s miraculous and maybe even touches upon the divine.

Desert Dream by Michael Parkes

What is magic? What is dream? Shall the thaumaturge conjure up that which is unseen? Miracle, wonder, magic and awe – is it a slight of hand or mystic powers from beyond?

What a Word Nerd word, eh?

Word Nerd : Onomatopoeic

Word Nerd is an on-going feature that shares and highlights unique, whimsical and sometimes forgotten or overlooked words. It’s dedicated to the logophile in us all.

Onomatopoeic (on-uh-mat-uh-pee-uh) noun

The formation or use of words that imitate the sounds associated with the objects or actions they refer to (cuckoo, sizzle, meow, zip). The use of such words for rhetorical effect.

Onomatopoeic is an odd word to describe because it is, in essence, a description! A tip I was given as a wee girl was that if I ever had a question about what an onomatopoeic word means, I should just ask myself, ‘What does it sound like?’.

I find myself utilizing onomatopoeic words all of the time, especially when I go off waxing prose about one thing or another. They are delightful words to use and say!

Word Nerd : Eldritch

Word Nerd is an on-going feature that shares and highlights unique, whimsical and sometimes forgotten or overlooked words. It’s dedicated to the logophile in us all.

Eldritch (el-dritch) adj.

A word that means eerie, unearthly, weird, ghastly, foreign, strange, or otherworldly.
“Do not expect again a phoenix hour, The triple-towered sky, the dove complaining, Sudden the rain of gold and heart’s first ease Traced under trees by the eldritch light of sundown.” – Cecil Day-Lewis ‘From Feathers to Iron’.
An eldritch scream filled the still night air and my awareness of the thinning veil between worlds grew stronger…
With Halloween, Samhain and The Day of the Dead so very close at hand, I felt that an otherworldly sort of word would be quite fitting and eldritch is a rather delightful word with Old English/Scottish origins (both of which are deliciously filled with otherworldly history, myths and lore).
May your day be filled with all sorts of pleasant, eldritch occurrences – and for those who are being affected by Sandy I hope that you and your dear ones are safe and secure!

Word Nerd : Yugen

Word Nerd is an on-going feature that shares and highlights unique, whimsical and sometimes forgotten or overlooked words. It’s dedicated to the logophile in us all.

Yugen  (yoo-gehn) n. (japanese)

An awareness of the universe that triggers emotional responses too deep and mysterious for words. It is at the core of the appreciation of beauty and art in Japan. It is the subtle and the profound.

Yugen is that moment when you feel that deep, almost overwhelming sense of love, greatness, smallness and connection to everything that has, does and ever will exist that gives your being the seemingly wonderful and painful sense that all that you are feeling is too much for your mere human body to hold within.

Nature often provides such emotional and even physical responses from me and when I discovered Yugen, I had a perfect “Ahhhh” moment. Being part Native American has undoubtedly provided me with a very deep connection to Mother Earth and to all life, past, present and future, though the same can be said of anyone who is open to the Universe’s ever present touch, whether through their culture, faith or simply their humanity. Yugen is a feeling I am one with and which is one with me and I am forever glad of it’s subtle and profound effects on my life and being.

What have your moments of Yugen been like?

Word Nerd : Sesquipedalian

Word Nerd is an on-going feature that shares and highlights unique, whimsical and sometimes forgotten or overlooked words. It’s dedicated to the logophile in us all.

Sesquipedalian (ses-qui-pe-da-lian) noun

A long word (a foot and a half long)

Sesquipedalian (ses-qui-pe-da-lian) adjective

Given to the overuse of long words.

My Sesquipedalian Ways…
I know I can be loquacious, sesquipedalian, if you will,
This can be exasperating, so I try to not abuse this skill.
So many choose to blankly stare or ignore my ways
When all I want is to discourse; engage in intelligent forays.
To stretch my mind for all it’s worth;
Encourage others in a new idea’s birth.
To debate and participate; to comprehend and grow;
To mature my mental state in all there is to know.
I wish that others would do this too
And not feel threatened as they seem to do.
For I am not an authority, nor the final word,
So for some to think that is really quite absurd.
Please do not neglect my queries, nor my somewhat verbose prose,
For, indeed, I seek but to learn and I truly hope this shows.
                                                                         ~ Ella
Truth be told, I fell in love with the word sesquipedalian long ago and I wrote this poem as a way to use it (plus it was a delightful exercise in what I felt to be humorous poetic phraseology ~ tee-hee!). Words are just so awesome and discovering, or re-discovering, them is always a treat. While I am certainly nowhere near as sesquipedalian in my writing style as I once was (those twelve dollar words score big-time in collage essays, no?) I still enjoy utilizing one seldom used or unique word here and there, scattered about like so many leaves upon a gentle breeze.
Here’s to an ineffable day!

Word Nerd : Petrichor

Word Nerd is an on-going feature that shares and highlights unique, whimsical and sometimes forgotten or overlooked words. It’s dedicated to the logophile in us all.

Petrichor (PET-ri-kuhr) noun

The name for the smell of rain on dry ground. The pleasant smell that accompanies the first rain after a dry spell. It was named by two Australian researchers, who discovered that the smell is an oily essence emitted from rocks or soils. The oil is a complicated mixture of at least fifty different compounds, rather like a perfume.

“But, even in the other pieces, her prose breaks into passages of lyrical beauty that come as a sorely needed revivifying petrichor amid the pitiless glare of callousness and cruelty.” Pradip Bhattacharya; Forest Interludes; Indianest.com; Jul 29, 2001.

Nature is the best perfumer since it has only the most natural of ingredients to work with, no?

The Scars are Worth It

Just a little something I was musing about. I found the first part of this saying while wandering about imgfav and it really struck a cord for me since I have quite a few scars (I am clumsy and whatnot and let’s face it, life leaves us all with our share of mental ones) and sometimes I can feel a bit ashamed or embarrassed by of them. As of late, though, I’ve been embracing them and realizing that they are something of a map, a story and a part of the making of who I am right now and that’s why I added the last part because the journey has been worth it and I am proud of who and what I am today – scars and all!

I hope everyone is able to make at least a little peace with their own scars and embrace their own maps and journeys.

Welcome Spring

Welcome Spring
Spring is officially here, though if I were to go by the weather and the already blooming pear tree, who’s flowers are already shedding in a showy fashion as sweet green leaves take their place, I’d say Spring was already well entrenched. Like with all seasons, I adore so much about Spring. From the fresh earthy scents of the thawing earth, to the glorious sounds of bird song that seem to swell each day in number, to the hazy green the mountains take on as the promise of the hearty growth that shall be appearing over the next few weeks. Already the windows have been open and at night at least one bedroom window has been kept open to let in the delicious cool of the evening (I find that I sleep better with a bit of fresh air – do you?). The lovely, bright pastels of the season have been popping up all over the web and there are so many things setting off creative sparks in my mind. The activities and decor and projects that I could do and maybe even will do and the promise of longer, warmer days to come…oh, it is exciting!

I do have a few projects to share that I’ve already done and, of course, there are bunnies everywhere that want to make a blog appearance or two (there is something about bunnies that simply begs me to create them…guess they really do multiply like crazy, even in the crafting wild!).
