Earth Day

LaWhimsy Earth Day 2013

It’s Earth Day again, and I am delighted to celebrate a day that brings about awareness of this precious Earth we call home. Everyday should really be considered Earth Day since we do live upon and utilize the precious resources the Earth provides each and every day, but having a special day to focus on is always a great thing. Like I spoke about last year (see this post), I do my best to lead a proactive, Earth friendly life, even if it can become a bit overwhelming at times. I just do my best to take a deep breath and tackle all those simple, little things that can so easily become second nature. It’s all about kaizen and being an everyday sort of example of green, positive, always changing and growing living. After the events of this past week, my nerves have been shaken and I feel a need for balance and a healthy connection to the Earth more than ever. I keep focusing on all the good that has come out of each of the tragedies and how human-kind really does show it’s awesomeness in such dark times. That’s what makes it all worth it and that’s what makes me want to do all that I can to leave a better World for tomorrow.  Happy Earth Day Everyone!

Word Nerd : Hanami

Word Nerd is an on-going feature that shares and highlights unique, whimsical and sometimes forgotten or overlooked words. It’s dedicated to the logophile in us all.

Hanami (hana-mi) verb

Flower viewing. Enjoying the beauty of flowers and blossoms. Gather or pick flowers.

LaWhimsy Sakura 2013

Spring is the penultimate hanami season, since after the bleak, quiet stillness of winter, the bright floral blooms simply beg for a celebration. In Japan the appreciation of the cherry blossom, or sakura, is practically a religion and hanami has all but become synonymous with the cherry blossom festivals that occur every spring. The plum and apricot, or ume,  blossoms are also out in full bloom at the same time, though the cherry blossom is ubiquitous at most hanami celebrations.

Hanami by Lisa Evans at Society6

For myself, I practice hanami year-round, though in my own sort of way. I admire the beauty of the grand blossoms of spring, the warm, hardy blooms of summer, the bright pops of autumn flowers and the green-house nurtured bouquets of winter. My favorites are the wild flowers that grow here and there and are often referred to as weeds (I don’t care how many seeds are spread when I make a wish on a dandelion, tee-hee!). To picnic amongst nature’s pallet of brightly colored flowers is one of the sweetest pleasures I know of (allergies aside).

LaWhimsy Sakura2 2013

“The artist is the confidant of nature, flowers carry on dialogues with him through the graceful bending of their stems and the harmoniously tinted nuances of their blossoms. Every flower has a cordial word which nature directs towards him.”     Auguste Rodin

Word Nerd : Welkin

Word Nerd is an on-going feature that shares and highlights unique, whimsical and sometimes forgotten or overlooked words. It’s dedicated to the logophile in us all.

Welkin (wel-kin) noun

The sky; the vault of the sky. The apparent surface of the imaginary sphere on which celestial bodies appear to be projected; Heaven.

Magic Sky by Jessica-Lorraine-Z

Who among us hasn’t gazed up, into the welkin, and wondered just what lay beyond the varying blues, the cloudy whites and grays, the deepness of the black night flung over with millions of glittering stars? The sheer majesty and limitless expanse of the sky makes one feel so small, a mere speck in the vast ether of this grand, glorious universe and yet, at the same time, it can make one so awesomely aware of their miniscule place in this tremendous space. The word welkin adds a certain mystic and majesty to the sky and it hints at life well beyond our own sphere and knowledge. Welkin is also poetic, as Shakespeare and Milton show us.

Weeping Welkin

“She is the weeping welkin, I the earth:
Then must my sea be moved with her sighs;
Then must my earth with her continual tears
Become a deluge, overflow’d and drown’d…”

- Shakespeare

touching the magical welkin

“But now my task is smoothly done, I can fly, or I can run Quickly to the green earth’s end, Where the bow’d welkin slow doth bend, And from thence can soar as soon To the corners of the Moon.” – John Milton (Comus,  A Mask)

golden dawn in the welkin

She sheds Her wings as She moves toward the dawn – embracing the golden rush to which She belongs… ~ La

I know that I never set my gaze toward the sky without it touching something deep within my soul and I think that by adding the word welkin to my vocab will only enhance this or at least it will enhance my descriptions of it, hehe!

WeekDay Wrap-Up 10: Luck ‘O the Irish

Adolie Day Illustration

A day late this may be, but for very good reason – I was whisked away yesterday for a day trip as the start of my birthday celebrations. With a brief respite in here I thought I’d share a few St. Patrick’s Day inspired images (this is great too!) and poems to keep the joy going…enjoy!

Deborah Turbeville. Russian Years 1995 – 2005 (detail)

Watery mints and pale greens take me away to an Isle of dreams where the Faerie Folk dance and the Leprechauns play

Hills as green as Emeralds cover the countryside,
Lakes as blue as Sapphires are Ireland’s special pride,
And rivers that shine like silver make Ireland look so fair-
But the friendliness of her people is the richest treasure there..

Brian Froud’s Faeries and Magical Creatures

Oh Erie ~ Where the wind has a sound like a sweet song,
And anyone can hum it,
And the heather grows upon the hills
And shamrocks not far from it

May your blessings outnumber the Shamrocks that grow,
And may trouble avoid you wherever you go.

May the love and protection Saint Patrick can give
Be yours in abundance as long as you live.

May the luck of the Irish be always at hand and may your blessings be precious and grand!

WeekDay Wrap-Up 9: Marching Along

Louisa by Nikoloz Mameishvili on Flickr

It’s been a busy month so far, what with last weekend being spent celebrating (and how – all three Lord of the Rings movies and two of the Indiana Jones ones. They are all awesome movies, but LOTRs is soooooooooo long, my goodness!) and this week taking care of this and that and everything in-between. I am getting all excited, however, because a favorite holiday is fast approaching…my birthday I mean St. Patrick’s Day! Seriously, I am giddy about both just because it is kinda awesome to have a birthday on said holiday and I adore all of the Irish/Celtic lore. I’m thinking of maybe even doing a little something special on my blog next week for it…tee-hee!

Leprechaun Fending off Beetle

Well, maybe not quite like this…

Since March is Women’s History Month, I’ve been looking into some of the history behind a few of the gorgeous vintage pictures of woman I have come across here in the virtual realm. This particular picture caught my eye early in the week and I was enamored first by the beauty of the photo’s composition and by the stunning woman in it. This is what I found out with a bit of research…

Gertrude Käsebier (1852-1934) : Zitkala-Sa 1898

The women in the photograph is Zitkala-Sa(1876-1938)and she was a beautiful Yankton Sioux woman of Native American & white mixed ancestry. She was well educated and went on to become an accomplished author, musician, composer and later went on to work for the reform of Indian policies in the United States. The photograph of her reading was taken by Gertrude Käsebier who was one of the most influential American photographers of the early 20th century. So talk about two incredibly amazing woman who’s places in history are not only remarkable, but so worth finding out about.

Princess Xenia of Russia Princess Alice of Greece

These two images are of  Princess Xenia of Russia and Princess Alice of Battenberg and later of Greece and Denmark. Two more remarkable women with unique histories that equal the haunting depths these images hold. You can almost sense a tangible personality from each one and their expressions hold so many secrets and so many stories. I’m actually in the process of researching the past of both of these women and each holds a certain amount of tragedy and fascination. Ah, the tomes of history never dull in my eyes!

WeekDay Wrap-Up 8: Hello March

Hello March by Lawhimsy

February has passed by and now here it is March 1st! I am truly giddy, not only because this means that Spring is on it’s way (I’ve had enough of cold, blerky weather (yes, blerky is a word – it means bleak and murky and I created it – take that Webster’s, hehe) but March means birthday time for me and a few friends too ~ Yay! First, though, I should mention that February was actually a fairly good month and I got a few things accomplished from the list I created.

February Things

I managed to draw a picture (a super cutesy one just because), start on my 52 Lists (yes that is a hand-embroidered cover by yours truly and I do plan to start blogging about them), start making a doll, oh and not pictured are all the Valentine’s I made and printed out and glittered to no end. It also seems that Balter was my most popular post in February and I was, and still am, quite delighted about the views I received (heck, I’m still very delighted when I get about 10 views a day – it’s the little things, truly!). Now onto March…

March List 003

I’ve started my March goals list and I’m all ready a raring to go…in spirit anyway. I’ve been fighting a bug since the middle of the week and I feel so physically run-down and just blerky (see, it has multiple uses). I’m hoping that I can get some rest this weekend, though the first birthday celebration is Sunday when my youngest brother turns 20 – wow, how the years can fly by! He’s a great brother and kid (as his older sister I get to call him that forever, hehe, just kidding T. – I’ll say guy!) and we have some great things planned to help him get his party on!

Visual approximation *evil grin*

March is also Women’s History Month and I, for one, have always been keenly interested in Women’s History and the role, often silent but always present, that women have played throughout history. The National Women’s History Museum is a terrific site to visit and there is always information galore available for more.

Word Nerd : Balderdash

Word Nerd is an on-going feature that shares and highlights unique, whimsical and sometimes forgotten or overlooked words. It’s dedicated to the logophile in us all.

Balderdash (bal-der-dash) noun

Senseless, stupid, or exaggerated talk or writing; nonsense.
The words that fall from my lips are a muddled mess, and my brain is tumbled too so utter balderdash is all you’ll get – this much I know is true…
I absolutely adore using the word balderdash. It’s always unexpected and it’s just fun to throw about here and there in a conversation. There is also just something so hilariously aristocratic about using  it, like you’d expect an older, eccentric uncle (who has a British accent, why not) to listen to some text-speak or slang and be all “That’s utter balderdash! Youth today!”

He’s one type of a loveable, balderdash using uncle, that’s for sure!

“I am almost ashamed to quote such nauseous balderdash.” – Thomas Babington Macaulay (History of England from James II).

Uncle Herman Chesterfield Vanheem was always so put off by the way today’s modern youth simply mushed their words and jumbled up the vowels and consonants (or dropped them outright). “It’s pure absurdity, that nonsense they call a language. Balderdash! In my day we’d write letter and handwriting counted every bit as much as decent spelling and pronunciation. Hrumph!” Then he got an iPhone and he’s been texting with the best of them. Why, just yesterday I received the following – “Sup? will b @ the pub l8r. Tell ur Mum, k?” Sigh, balderdash indeed!

Am I right or what, tee-hee!

Hope you’ll have as much fun using (and over-using) the word balderdash as I do!

Autumn Ambiance

It’s spicy air and moldering ground, it’s sharp contrasts and cracking sounds, Autumn has come, it’s finally here, that last great burst of Nature’s flare. So marvel now, take some time, delight and wonder at the divine…
I am so thrilled to welcome Autumn’s return (I mean, seriously I’m waxing poetic here, tee-hee!)! It’s a bright, glorious day, though perhaps a wee bit more gusty than I like, but still ~ It’s officially Autumn!
May this Autumn be every bit as kind and delightful as can be!
