• Hello and Welcome! I’m Ella and I’m something of an artistic, creative, curious and fanciful spirit. Autumn Ambiance

It’s spicy air and moldering ground, it’s sharp contrasts and cracking sounds, Autumn has come, it’s finally here, that last great burst of Nature’s flare. So marvel now, take some time, delight and wonder at the divine…
I am so thrilled to welcome Autumn’s return (I mean, seriously I’m waxing poetic here, tee-hee!)! It’s a bright, glorious day, though perhaps a wee bit more gusty than I like, but still ~ It’s officially Autumn!
May this Autumn be every bit as kind and delightful as can be!

All Our Happy Endings by illusionality

Such fragile, dusty blooms are soon to be the fate of many a lush plant as the Earth prepares for it’s upcoming slumber, but before that all shall take on a burst of color…

I long to follow this path and discover where it wends. You can almost taste the dusky, sweet scent of the damp earthy ground mixed with the crisp Autumn air and brilliantly colored leaves…

Autumn by Penelope Dullaghan

I am already finding myself layering on cozy sweater, warm knee socks and fingerless gloves (they help keep my otherwise icy fingers a bit more ‘alive’ feeling). I mean as it is said,

Alas, the one downside to this glorious time of year is that colds are being passed about and no matter how diligent I am about my health, I still manage to catch one or two (dozen – or so it feels). Currently I am in a state of semi-misery, despite the bright, crisp, sunshiny days the week has been rolling out, since I have an aching head and congested everything else. It’s nothing bad enough to keep me in bed, but it’s just enough to make me feel a touch cranky and everything takes a lot more energy and effort to actually do (okay, fine, truth time – it takes more to actually make myself get up and do stuff – once I’m doing it I’m alright, it’s just the getting there part. I’m sure y’all know what I mean…right?).

So I may not be so far gone as to want to slide down into a stone pool of fallen leaves, but you get the idea… I do think that I’ll be better in a day or so, so I’ll leaf off (puns are awesome!) with the whining and share a few more joyful shots of Autumn’s delights…

This sweater is so Autumn – look at those colors and the pattern! Oh to be able to truly knit!

This makes me long for those cool days ahead. For flea market trips, hay rides, cider sipping, wood smoke on the crisp air, grilled cheese and hot soup dinners, cuddling under blankets with furry buddies and great books. I can’t wait to drive the Blue Ridge Parkway, visit Floyd and various other quaint small towns around here, attend the festivals and just live it up at the start of my most favorite ever time of year. From now until January I am going to be in rare form ~ colds, sniffles and body aches you can’t stop my spirits from loving it all, tee-hee!

So wearing something warmer when it’s cold out is probably smarter than this, but oh well, lol.

Hooray for Autumn! Is anybody else excited about this upcoming season?

Back-To-Schedule Time

Yesterday marked my first day with my new Autumn into Winter Schedule and let me tell you, I am stoked! No, truly, I am. I have long been the sort who likes and actually needs a schedule to keep my otherwise frantic, mad-scrambled mind clear and calm (or at least as close to calm as it’ll ever be, tee-hee). Summer usually means a much looser, sometimes lost schedule for me and between that and the heat, I usually wither up and get all crank-spanky. This year wasn’t as bad as years past, but still I am delighted to be regaining a set, yet still reasonably flexible, order to my days. Besides, I don’t know about any of you, but thanks to years of school (traditional and otherwise), this time of year is forever ingrained as a wonderful, fresh start. Since I don’t do official schooling anymore, I went out and did a bit of Back-to-Schedule supply shopping instead.

I got pens (and not just black or blue ink, but colored inks too!), notebooks (those floral composition books are college ruled and were a dollar apiece – score!), mini-notebooks and more.

See, my craft-studio desk is all ready! BTW, those colored-pencils and flower-topped pencil are made of actual recycled tree-branches – how cool is that?!? I was beyond excited when I found them at Marshalls for a steal because I had seen similar images of such things floating about tumblr and imgfave and now I have some of my very own ~ Yay!

I also got some more embroidery thread (major sale – five dollars each, otherwise forgetaboutit – those sets of DMC floss are expensive!) and a neat little kit to needle-felt a bunny. I am hoping that this kit with it’s molds will help me figure out needle-felting (my attempts so far have not been the greatest). I’ll give a review of it once I’ve used it.

So that’s my Back-to-Schedule supply list. Does anyone else feel that this is a time of year for fresh starts? Did anybody else go out and buy a few school/craft supplies even if they aren’t in school anymore?

Here’s to a great new week and Schedule!

Poetry in Motion ~ Dreams

Here is a poem that I feel is so true, for dreams, much like hope, help lay the path before you (sorry, I couldn’t help but rhyme).

Dreams

by Langston Hughes

Hold fast to dreams

For if dreams die

Life is a broken-winged bird

That cannot fly.

Hold fast to dreams

For when dreams go

Life is a barren field

Frozen with snow.

So dare to keep your dreams and hope alive!

Feeling that thing called Inspiration…

I am starting to feel that stirring of creativity and the actual desire to put it into motion again. The doldrums of Summer are starting to wane and I am totally thanking this sweet weather that has wandered into this area. This morning I awoke to bright blue skies with the fluffiest of white clouds dotting it here and there, a gentle sort of warmth to the air, a mellow breeze that holds the merest hint of Autumn in it’s current and the greatest blessing of all – comfortable humidity levels ~ YAY!

Time to Awaken

Now all of the ideas that have been whirling about in my head are eager to be made real and, goodness, are there ever a lot. I even have a new stitchalong to take part in (it’s another delightful cutie of one and I already know what the end results will be for mine!). I’m also working on an embroidery pattern of my own (squirrels will be involved, that’s all I’ll say) and have, oh I don’t know, about a half-dozen more things I want to embroider. Then there are the back-to-schedule planning and actions I want to implement (here and in my daily life), the various projects I want to tackle (hello wardrobe sort-out), the day-trips and adventures I want to go on (for me every time I go out can qualify as an adventure, especially if a certain pal of mine is involved) and just all of the fun Autumn things to look forward to. This is the start of my favorite time of year and even though I’m sure the weather will still be a bit Summery for awhile yet, I’m already feeling the magic of the new, upcoming season. Anyone else a bit burned out by Summer (literally or figuratively)?

Summer Dead Zone

Oh deary my ~ I’ve fallen into the Summer Dead Zone* and it’s a lazy, hazy world where it’s strange to truly be doing anything at all and yet doing nothing is not exactly what’s been happening either. It’s all a muddle, really, and I have been slowly making my way back to my version of decently normal sanity (which is, to some, not normal at all, but I suppose that’s the truth of everyone’s take on normal, no?). I’ve been spending time on Pinterest (Which is addicting) and Tumblr (Which is super addicting) and thinking, which, for me, is usually a dangerous past-time.

This time, though, it’s mostly been good since I’ve been mulling over some ideas for the blog. Nothing too drastic, just a few new features that I think could be fun and show a bit more of what makes me “ME”. I’m thinking of a book and movie review feature (though really, it will be more of me sharing my thoughts on the various and quirky things I read and watch), an Icons feature (This will share the people I adore and my passion for history), a weekly discovery feature (a total copy feature from a few of the blogs I really like but with my touches on it, natch), a weekly artsy/crafty feature from my workspace and maybe one that showcases other artists and crafters that I admire and aspire to be as awesomely creative as. Those are just a few and if anyone has any suggestions for anything else, please share – I’m always open to new ideas! I’ll be implementing the features in the next few weeks since it’s almost back-to-schedule time (no more official school for me, but the back-to-something pull is still strong at this time of year, hehe) and what better time to start something new!

Happy Days and Namaste ~ Ella

*The Summer Dead Zone is that time of quiet, almost eerie inactivity that seems to occur at some point during the summer months, whether due to Summer distractions or just the soporific late Summer days.

To Market, To Market

To The Flea Market that is!

Today was the start of the twice-annual local Flea Market that’s held over at the fairgrounds. As has been the tradition of the past few years, we headed over bright and early to partake in the friendly melee of people, junk and yummy treats. Due to the weather scare from the day before (the worst of which missed this area, thank goodness (and the Mountains – they break up so much)!) there weren’t as many vendors as usual, but since we’ll most likely see them in the Autumn, it was alright. What was there was more than enough and we walked away with a few treasures.

First there is this filthy, but still darling rubber kitty. For a dollar I couldn’t say no and with a bit of cleaning he’ll be joining the rest of the rubber toys that are scattered about the house.

Next up is a bag of wooden spools and yet another filthy mess, but this time it’s old buttons! Once cleaned up I’m sure they will find new life as stuffie eyes, trim bits and who knows what else and the spools, well, besides just being neat as all get out, I have a few ideas for them as well (I like to tease and dangle the promise of future blog posts, hope you don’t mind too much..hehehe).

This little gal was another dollar find and I do have a soft spot for tiny, adorable, ceramic treasures. Now I shall show you my ultimate find of the day…wait for it…

Aren’t they wonderful?!!?! I got the pair of them for only five dollars and they are still wrapped in their 1971 plastic wrap! They have a bit of water damage on the very bottom, but that doesn’t detract one bit from their sweetness! I can’t wait to hang these cuties, oh and don’t you just want to give that sad-eyed darling a hug and a puppy?!

On last thing before I sign off, I simply have to share Glory’s absolutely awesome find ~

This is Sebastian Hitchcock and with what I’m calling her ‘pretty face’ discount, she brought him home for less than twenty-five dollars! Oh, the photo-shoots and decorating opportunities to be had! I’m still a bit wary of it because taxidermy kinda freaks me out (ever since I was quite young I was convinced that taxidermy could and would come to life and get me because somehow it would blame me for it’s taxidermied state. Still, I adore Natural History Museums and those places are, pardon the pun, stuffed with it – go figure!) Perhaps Sebastian will help ease my slight phobia?

Anyway, that’s a sum-up of my Flea Marketing adventure (and a small peak into my quirky psyche)  ~ I hope it was a wee little bit entertaining! Enjoy your weekend adventures!

Earth Day My Way

I really enjoy Earth Day and all of the awareness it raises for the World around us. That same World that we each of us live in and with day in and day out. The hype of Earth Day brings to the forefront all of the promise and ideas that abound when it comes to being good stewards of the planet we all call home. I do my best to live thoughtfully when it comes to being green and caring for nature. Upcycling is almost second nature in many respects. Old clothes that are too worn to be donated are turned into cute stuffies, pet toys and bedding, bags, collage-work, rags, etc. Magazines are shared amongst friends and family and then given to local doctor’s offices or used in art and then what’s left is recycled. What containers are used are sent to recycling or find new storage uses around the home. There is no bottled water in the house since there is no need what with a nice water filter and a few BPA-free reusable bottles or glasses. The coffee maker has a reusable filter and only natural landscaping is used to make the yard as hardy as it is pretty. Lights are used only when needed for the most part, we have no air-conditioner (more because of the age of the house, but we still have managed without it just fine). The list goes on and on and while I am by far not the best when it comes to lessening my carbon foot-print, I do what I can and most of it is really quite easy. It is a pain to have to take all of the recycling to the local dump and then sort it out into it’s respective bins (to rural (and locally unorganized – doh) for anything fancier at this point, I guess) and sometimes it is simply easier to get the cheaper item instead of it’s pricier and harder to locate green alternative but I am only human. Do you consider yourself a green person or like you’re living a green lifestyle but maybe aren’t at the same time? Whenever I use a “what’s your carbon footprint” calculator I tend to get this overwhelming feeling, like what I do isn’t near enough and why am I killing the planet and being so wasteful instead of doing more (yeah, I can be super intense and over-sensitive like that sometimes, heh). I do try and keep it all in perspective but it can be a bit much at times. All I know for sure is that I do love the Earth and all it has given me and keeps on giving me each day I call it home and that I’ll just keep on loving it back in my small, simple way.

Happy Earth Day Everyone!

Gif Me No More Trouble

This week saw me dedicate more hours of my life than should ever be necessary for a mere three seconds of what I wanted to be looped film footage. That’s right – three seconds. True, they are possibly three of the best seconds of film footage to be had since they are of Hadley Fraser in The Phantom of the Opera 25th Anniversary at The Royal Albert Hall. Sure, he’s absolutely film worthy, but it was his particular facial expression during the rooftop scene between Raoul and Christine (played by the wonderful Sierra Boggess) right after he tells Christine it was a dream and nothing more. It is the best “Bitch, Please” face I have ever seen and my dear bff about fell over laughing when she first beheld it (I got the DVD about two weeks ago now and we have watched it three times since – we’re not obsessed or anything, I swear…ahem.). I new right then and there that I simply had to find a gif of it and when not a one turned up, I had to make it myself. Easy, no? No. I Googled my fingers blue attempting to find a way to take that precious three seconds and loop and my first tries were miserable failures. Finally I prevailed and was able to present my bff with the end product – a perfect Bitch Please gif.
