• Hello and Welcome! I’m Ella and I’m something of an artistic, creative, curious and fanciful spirit. Earth Day

LaWhimsy Earth Day 2013

It’s Earth Day again, and I am delighted to celebrate a day that brings about awareness of this precious Earth we call home. Everyday should really be considered Earth Day since we do live upon and utilize the precious resources the Earth provides each and every day, but having a special day to focus on is always a great thing. Like I spoke about last year (see this post), I do my best to lead a proactive, Earth friendly life, even if it can become a bit overwhelming at times. I just do my best to take a deep breath and tackle all those simple, little things that can so easily become second nature. It’s all about kaizen and being an everyday sort of example of green, positive, always changing and growing living. After the events of this past week, my nerves have been shaken and I feel a need for balance and a healthy connection to the Earth more than ever. I keep focusing on all the good that has come out of each of the tragedies and how human-kind really does show it’s awesomeness in such dark times. That’s what makes it all worth it and that’s what makes me want to do all that I can to leave a better World for tomorrow.  Happy Earth Day Everyone!

Self Made Sunshine

LateMarchSnow2013

So a few days barely into Spring and I wake up to snow and not just a light snow, but this (see the image above). A thick falling, snow-globe envying free-fall that clumps to the ground and covers everything, oh and continues off and on for a few days. It’s still flurrying as I write this and the forecast holds no promise of actual sunshine or warmer weather until the weekend at least. That’s where my self made sunshine comes in.

HappyDesk1

Thanks to Target’s clearance end-caps I was able to score a few happy, sunshiny items for my desk. Between the brightly colored notebooks (I can never, ever have to many – it’s an illness, really), magnets, note-pads and note-cards (with envelopes!), I am one delighted gal.

HappyDesk2

These are all from one of those terrific designer lines (Mara-Mi) and thanks to some great patience on my part and some very, very good luck I scored big-time (a great deal on something useful is always a win!).

HappyDesk3

I think these cheery yellows, oranges, pinks, greens, and blues are the perfect remedy to these early Spring days that are more gray and white then sunny and bright. Now, if only I could work up the desire to actually give my studio that overhaul it so desperately needs then I would have a perfectly happy desk indeed, lol!

Self Made Sunshine

Here’s some sunshine to share, just in-case you or someone you know needs some!

10 Things That Make Me Happy

Here’s a simple list of 10 things that make me happy…

1. Smiling at someone and getting a smile in return.

2. Creating something, like a piece of embroidery or a soft sculpture.

3. Starting a new book or rereading/revisiting an old favorite for the umpteenth million time.

4. Singing and dancing (or baltering) around just for the fun of it ~ alone or with others.

5. Enjoying a warm cup of coffee or tea on the porch early in the morning while watching the neighborhood wake up.

6. Waking up to a bright and gorgeously sunny morning filled with bird songs (I am so longing for Spring).

7. Receiving a friendly letter or e-mail from someone ~ just because.

8. Engaging in an interesting, enjoyable, witty, goofy, anything and everything conversation with a friend.

9. Indulging in an extraordinarily rich and delectable piece of chocolate…or two.

10. When Jojo curls up next to me and purrs or Weiky wants a cuddle.
Oh, and Lil Bub ~ I adore this kitty!!!

Mondaze

I generally like Mondays since I find them to be such a nice, fresh start to a new week and I’m usually fairly energetic and all pumped-up, ready to tackle all sorts of things. Today I’m feeling a bit hazy, however, and while I am dead-set on actually accomplishing a few things, I do wish my head would clear-up. I do blame the weather, what with it’s insane highs and lows, but still, urgh… So as not to get all cranky, I’ll share what I’ve been doing this morning (you’ve been warned, hehe).

FebruaryPlans

I’ve started a February plans list, just to try and get my head in order. The Calendar page (oops, my spelling was off) is done – I printed out the DesignLoveFest Calendar in January and I’m planning on making each month pop, LaWhimsy style!

FlossBoxI also got out my floss box and started working on a small project that I had started the groundwork for last month but then promptly pushed aside for whatever reason (yeah, okay, I can be super lazy sometimes). Here are two of the results…

StitchedGemsOh yeah ~ Stitched Paper Gems! They are not as big as they appear here – only about 2inches tall, and they are darling. This was my first time stitching paper and I made it easy on myself by using card-stock since regular paper rips so easily.

PrismacolorfunI only stitched two because I decided to get out my Prismacolor pencils and play with a water-color effect for the rest. Here they are drying and waiting for their threads. I think I might share a small tutorial for making these – what do you think?

Well, that’s my Monday morning so far and I’m planning on keeping Happy Thoughts and hopefully some more momentum as the day and week progress. Here’s to a great week for us all!

First Impressions…

…Otherwise known as Pride and Prejudice, is celebrating it’s 200th anniversary today! By far one of Jane Austen’s most popular books, Pride and Prejudice has held a special place in my heart as the first of her books I had the pleasure of reading.

I guess it started something of a slight obsession…This is barely a glimpse of all the books I have written by or about Jane Austen and Her times!

It is also the one I have the most copies of (though Emma is closing in fast, lol). Most of these are simply awesome editions I picked up from sales racks when I happened upon them (like the Gramercy one from above) but I do have at least one fantastic vintage one. There is just something so delightful about finding a vintage copy of a favorite book – it makes me giddy. My oldest Pride and Prejudice edition is one from 1945 by Doubleday and I happened upon it while out antiquing ages ago.

It has the most lovely blue cover with a cream spine and all the pages are perfectly wonky, yellowed and uneven and I adore it. The binding is still tight and the illustrations by Robert Ball are still lovely to behold.

Here is Lizzy (or I suppose, to be all nice and proper, Miss Elizabeth Bennet) in all her illustrated glory.

And here is Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, looking dignified but with no improper pride.

I have been enjoying all of the wonderful links and quotes that the Jane Austen Author Fan Page has been sharing all this month in anticipation of this anniversary event and I’ve thumbed through my Annotated version of Pride and Prejudice just for the fun of it. While it is no longer my top favorite (That would have to be Mansfield Park or Emma) it is still a treasure trove of wonderful reading and it’s characters are one’s I shall remain fond of revisiting for all time. Happy Anniversary, indeed!

Playing Footsie

It’s been yet another hectic start to a new week and it felt like yet another, weird sort of three-day weekend since we were completely without water for all of Saturday.  I’m talking the entire town was dry since, due to the cold and snow, the electricity to the water supply was down. We’re still on a boil water alert and probably will be until tomorrow, but hey, I’m just glad it’s back, It’s one of those little things you use all the time and yet don’t take the time to appreciate until it’s just not there. A perfect lesson if ever there was one, to stop and be thankful for all those everyday sorts of things.

That said, you’re undoubtedly wondering – just what does this have to do with feet or shoes – and I’ll tell you…nothing. I just happened to have these two happy pics of my feet that I figured I’d share since I’m a bit *duh* feeling.

Here I am all cozy, comfy and toasty warm, showing off my favorite slippers (they were a gift and were from American Eagle), cute floral socks and the best pair of legwarmers ever!

These are my Tiptoe Glow Heel from ModCloth and I absolutely adore them to pieces! They remind me of my favorite pair of Jeffery Campbells  and that’s a very, very good thing! Oh, and aren’t those tights something else?!

So there you go, a rather gratuitous blog post about my feet, lol! Here’s to a Happy and Productive week!

Snowy Daze

WinterWhiteWhimsy5

Out the back window – you can’t even see the mountains!

As promised, a few of the snowy views from around my abode. Most of these images were snapped late on Thursday evening when the snow fell the heaviest. It was a wet snow, the kind with thick flakes that clump up and cause tree limbs and plants to bend and buckle underneath their weight. Never fear, however, we went out and brushed off as many of the trees in the yard as we could and we only lost a few, small peripheral branches that were bound to fall sooner or later, given any of Nature’s whims.

WinterWhiteWhimsy1

That’s the pear tree, being all white and sweet.

WinterWhiteWhimsy3

I was actually leaning out of the dinning room window so that I could get a shot of the ground that was still visable underneath the Magnolia – look at those flakes!

WinterWhiteWhimsy2

This was also me leaning out of the window. I think this side of the house is so pretty and the snow makes it magical!

WinterWhiteWhimsy4

Just a wee peak out the window over my bed. The Cherry Tree was all spidery-white.

WinterWhiteWhimsy7

The next day everything was clear and bright, and only the whiteness of the World gave a clue to the storm that happened merely hours before!

Making Lists

So here I am, one full(ish) week under my belt and another new one started and yet I still feel, I dunno, a bit off and at loose ends. I want to feel accomplished at the end of the day, even if I didn’t actually finish something, I’d be nice to think I’d done something – anything. Sure, I manage to do my daily ‘normal’ and that’s something, but it’s not enough. I need more and to that end, I think I need to start making a few lists. I love lists and how they give an air of organization and order to scattered thoughts and bits of inspiration. If left to it’s own devices, my hyper-active brain would never get anything done since something new and shiny always appears. A list provides concrete goals and crossing things off just feels good. Sure, shiny-object syndrome still plays an active roll, but with a list I have something to answer to, to pull my attentions back to center. Anyone else love to make lists?

Creative List Making, No?

Once I have a good list made, I’ll be able to get to work and I think my days will feel a bit more productive in the best of ways. Also, once I can get my hands on something with Instagram capabilities, I’ll be able to start sharing my accomplishments a bit easier and one heck of a lot more often. It’s not that my digital camera and I don’t get along, it’s just all the steps it takes to take the picture, upload it, edit it, etc. – it can just be a bit much at times. Soon, though, hopefully soon.

Until then, I’m off to start making those lists!
